ATOMEXPO-2017 IX International Forum was officially launched on 19 June in Moscow. The forum is an annual event held on the initiative of Rosatom State Corporation and acknowledged as a major international exhibition and business venue to discuss the current state of affairs in the nuclear industry and shape the trends for its further development. The key theme of the forum this year is Nuclear Technologies: Safety, Environment, Sustainability.

The welcoming remarks at ATOMEXPO-2017 inaugural ceremony were given by Rosatom State Corporation Director General Alexey Likhachev, World Nuclear Association (WNA) Director General Agneta Rising, World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) Chairman Jacques Regaldo, OECD Nuclear Energy Agency Director-General William D. Magwood and IAEA Deputy Director-General Mikhail Chudakov.

Unveiling the forum, ROSATOM Director General Alexey Likhachev noted that ATOMEXPO platform has become “one of the highly reputed venues for the exchange of views and ideas on developing the global nuclear industry”. “The ninth forum embraces over 6,500 delegates, 653 companies, over 100 of which have their booths presented at the exhibition, 33 official governmental delegations, and 65 participating countries including Russia,” the head of Rosatom informed extending particular welcome to the four countries that take part in the forum for the first time: Sudan, Ethiopia, Columbia and Sri-Lanka. “Today we are going to analyze the challenges that we are facing and are going to speak about the new, by far stronger place and fuller participation of nuclear energy in the future energy mix. I am confident that we would be able to find solutions and move ahead together,” concluded A. Likhachev.

WNA Director General Agneta Rising, in her turn, underscored that nuclear energy continues developing globally. “In 2016, like the year before, the volume of energy generated by nuclear power plants has grown by almost 10 GW that is more than twice as large as the average annual value for the previous 25 years. Access to inexpensive, reliable, sustainable and modern source of energy is one of the key tasks of Sustainable Development Goals. Nuclear energy is to play an important role in the carbon-free energy mix,” A. Rising said.

World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) Chairman Jacques Regaldo, for his part, highlighted that the main task is to provide safe nuclear energy. “Safety is a definitive priority for all. It is the main condition for the existence and development of nuclear energy,” J. Regaldo observed.

ATOMEXPO Forum traditionally takes place as a congress and exhibition.
